Terminal Optimism

Changing Treatment

Scans came back...

Unfortunately the last round of scans showed some disease progression.

No new tumors but no reduction either. The tumors in my lung grew--one doubled in size since January. The spot on my spine also grew significantly.  The concern initially was that the cancer had moved from my spine bone to the actual spinal cord. Luckily, after a MRI of my spine we were able to rule out spinal cord involvement. It was an enormous relief. I have had a lot of back pain and I thought I had just injured myself working out. However, it turns out that the tumor (on my t10-t12) created a small fracture in my spine. My back pain has been likely coming from that. The plan is to treat this spot with focused radiation.

This does mean that the Trodelvy infusions have stopped working for me. My oncologist and I talked about options for my next course of treatment and chose Xeloda (capecitabine). This will be an oral chemo that I take every day for two weeks, take a week off and then repeat. I am looking forward to being able to take chemo at home over going to infusions at the clinic. Switching treatment is difficult because you never really know how it is going to impact you until you have experienced it. Side effects can be difficult to plan for and sometimes you have to wait and see how it goes.

In the meantime I am off chemotherapy for one week until things get figured out with the new medication and the radiation treatment.

Grateful that I am still able to try to treat this disease.

Grateful for the support of my online community!
